Brian Rubin is a writer living in New York's Hudson Valley, about 90 minutes north of Manhattan. Until April 2010, he earned (most of) his living as a full-time reporter for the Shawangunk Journal newspaper in Ellenville, NY, a little village nestled under a mountain, which exists within the borders of the town of Wawarsing. Since that time, he toiled as the assistant of an abusive, rich, old man for about six weeks. After a brief stint of unemployment, he began teaching classes at Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake, NY, SUNY New Paltz (his alma mater), and the Woodstock Day School in Saugerties, NY.
Brian grew up in Jericho, NY, a suburb in Long Island's Nassau County. He earned his bachelor's degree from SUNY New Paltz, where he majored in English and double-minored in communications and dramatic writing for the theatre. During that time, he wrote the one-act play, "Around the Block," which was subsequently produced and published by the Mohonk Mountain Stage Company, a group specializing in the "reader's theatre" format in the Hudson Valley. After a short, one-year stint in Manhattan's book publishing world, Brian returned to New Paltz to earn his master's degree in English, during which time he earned a TAship and taught first year composition at the undergraduate level. He walked at the Fall of 2007 commencement ceremony.
Sometime during that time, he joined the band called the Zydeco Pilots as the drummer, and went on four tours of the American South-East. His dear departed 2002 Honda Civic earned many more miles on it as a result than it would have otherwise. Recently, he purchased a 2009 Honda Civic after the '02 fought a battle with a guardrail and lost. Long live the Honda Civic.
For a while, Brian was a frequent contributor to Geek Monthly Magazine, a pretty hip publication based out of L.A., California, that is sadly now defunct. For Geek, he wrotearticles about a Magic: The Gathering Tournement in Chicago, Dungeons and Dragons, people who drive Star Trek cars, toys, comic books, and even interviewed Peter "Optimus Prime" Cullen, who very kindly recorded a voicemail message for him. What a mensch.
Since Geek's passing, Brian contributed articles to the relaunched GameFan Magazine, written question-cards for Trivial Pursuit: Bet You Know It, and has even done some work for public sector consultants Fairweather Consulting and Rondout Consulting. He's always on the lookout for new, exciting freelance writing ventures to occupy his time.
Brian is also currently working on a webcomic venture with his constant creative partner, Collin David, a talented artist. Watch this space for developments. Click here to purchase the first issue of their comic book, Coptopus. It's fab.
Brian Rubin is also me.
